.: HISTORY

Sperrin Óg celebrated 10 years of playing in the Tyrone County League in 2001. This was the same year that the club first won a major senior title, by lifting the Division III League Shield. The Senior team went on to emulate that achievement in 2002 by winning both the Division II League and Intermediate Championship title.

.: 1997

1997 saw big changes within the Sperrin Óg club. For the first time an underage team was established within the club and because of the continued number of Greencastle players registered it was decided to hold training and matches at Greencastle G.F.C grounds.

The Senior and Minor teams trained and played under the management of Séan Donaghy from Loughmacrory. Overall the senior team secured a total of 9 points out of a possible 15 in the Tony Fox Junior League. The seniors also came runners up in the Shield of the Tyrone County 7-a-side competition. Due to a lack of players at underage level the Minor team was forced to withdraw from the Minor League and Championship.

Séan Carlin from Mountfield took charge of our U-12 Team, 1997, with a squad of over 30 players. The team finished top of the Group B Section but were unfortunately beaten by Carrickmore in the play-offs of the League.

The 1997 season concluded with a buffet night in 'McGinns Loft' on Saturday 10th January 1998. The following presentations were made on the night:

Senior Player of the Year: - Mena Tuohey
Most Promising Senior Player: - Tracey Ann McCullagh
Minor Player of the Year: - Aideen Devlin
Most Promising Minor Player: - Cathy Teague
Club Person of the Year: - Bernie Tuohey

Both trainers, Séan Donaghy and Séan Carlin were also presented with gifts.

Sperrin Óg would like to express their thanks to Mary Donaghy, Patricia McCullagh, Peggy McCullagh and Teresa McCullagh for compiling the above information.
